Reaching Young Voters: NextGen Youth Research 2018
May 21, 2018
Based on Spring 2018 polling, this slidedeck summarizes research on how youth audiences (defined here as Millennials and younger) approach electoral politics.
The authors identify four drivers influencing voting: political understanding, belief in the political system, a sense of civic or personal responsibility to vote, and alignment with the Democratic Party. Conversely, the lack of these drivers (e.g., skepticism of the political system) are among four key barriers to participation identified. The authors also describe four types of mindsets among young eligible voters, one that leads to voting and three that do not. These latter three mindsets may be based on apathy (lack of personal political interest), a revolutionary mentality (distrust of a broken political system), or uncompromising values (refusal to vote for candidates they do not fully support). -

Understanding Climate Change Perceptions and Attitudes Across Racial/Ethnic Groups
March 8, 2018
The authors of this paper seek to clarify how African-Americans and Hispanics differ from Anglos when it comes to pro-environmental orientations, measured via a battery of questions about environmental and climate concern. Using a 2016 online survey, weighted to reflect the 2010 US Census for gender and race, the authors found that Hispanics reported higher environmental/climate beliefs than Anglos, with African-Americans in between. However, there were no significant differences among the three groups when it came to knowledge of pro-environmental behaviors, risk perceptions from climate change, or pro-environmental behavioral intentions.
