Over the last four years, the Potential Energy Coalition has gathered a significant amount of data on how Americans are engaging with climate issues—what’s on their minds, what does and does not motivate them to act, whom we can move and how. In this pivotal moment, this data can offer crucial insights to inform and strengthen our collective work. During this session hosted by the Lab, Potential Energy will share their recent findings, and discuss where they see the biggest opportunities to advance climate action.

In these times, I’ve found myself called back to the words of Dean Spade in his 2020 book, Mutual Aid. The book opens with Spade’s reflections on mutual aid where he shares:
“Mutual Aid has been a part of all large, powerful social movements, and it has a particularly important role to play right now, as we face unprecedented dangers and opportunities for mobilization. Mutual aid gives people a way to plug into movements based on their immediate concerns, and it produces social spaces where people grow new solidarities. At its best, mutual aid actually produces new ways of living where people get to create systems of care and generality that address harms and foster well-being.”

Communities of color have long been at the forefront of environmental and climate justice movements—yet their voices are too often marginalized within larger advocacy spaces. This session is designed to center and uplift BIPOC advocates by exploring strategies to amplify their leadership, create inclusive organizing structures, and build durable, supportive networks within the climate movement.
