Hispanic voters don’t approve of Donald Trump’s environmental policies. Among Hispanics who voted in 2020, just 44% approve of Trump “cutting environmental regulations”. Broken down by ideology, 46% of liberal Hispanic voters but 59% of conservative Hispanic voters approve of Trump “cutting environmental regulations”.

This post includes a roundup of climate and environment headlines, data points, and key takeaways from this week’s public polls – including a lot of new polling on the Build Back Better plan, its climate and environmental provisions, and economic arguments in favor of the plan.

Climate organizers should keep their eye out for people who say they feel responsible to reduce emissions. This research shows that people who say they feel responsible to reduce climate change also say they intend to take future political actions. However, these people don’t necessarily say they took actions like these in the past. Americans who feel more climate responsible are more likely to say they would (A) “join a campaign to convince elected officials to take action to reduce global warming” and (B) support a presidential candidate who “strongly supports taking action to reduce global warming.” These feelings of responsibility did not predict someone claiming they had contacted a politician about global warming in the past 12 months, though.

Using data on extreme weather to locally target messaging in areas experiencing it can dramatically increase impact. Through a pilot with Climate Central, the Innovation Team at the Partnership Project acquired a data set from NOAA of geographies impacted by extreme weather. They partnered with the National Wildlife Federation to examine the performance of two emails sent in July on extreme heat. They found people in the zip codes experiencing extreme heat for at least two consecutive days responded at a higher rate, doubling conversions. This confirms polling suggesting that local extreme weather influences opinions. Additional weather data sets from the NOAA are available by county, zip code, and Congressional district. This data is available for use to inform your online and offline targeting and match the right local extreme weather message/creative to the people impacted by that particular type of extreme weather. You can also watch a debrief video.
