The justice and equity implications of the clean energy transition

Review of research on the equity implications of a clean energy transition (how such a transition could negatively impact some groups and communities), and ‘just transition’ policies meant to abate those effects. The literature suggests that energy and climate policies and programs must specifically embed equity and social justice within climate change mitigation goals and emphasize commitments to job training and economic development to support those folks adversely affected by the transition away from fossil fuels to new, renewable sources of energy. (As Climate Justice Alliance phrases it, “Transition is inevitable. Justice is not.”)

Politics & Global Warming, April 2020

For Republicans, belief in global warming per se is less of a sticking point (most think it’s happening, including 47% of conservative Republicans), whereas accepting that it’s human caused remains less common (only 30% of conservative Republicans). This report provides an analysis of public opinion data about the views of Democratic, Independent, and Republican voters registered on global warming, climate and energy policies, and personal collective action. Results show that the majority of registered voters believe that global warming is real (75%) and caused by human action (61%).

Peer Learning Exchange: How We’re Adapting Voter Engagement Strategies

The Lab community came together to talk about all things c3 voter engagement and how to pivot in 2020. We discussed how are organizations thinking about voter contact (including: integrated voter engagement programs, voter registration, and Get-Out-The-Vote efforts) in this era of physical distancing. Leaders in voter engagement discussed how to pivot voter registration and voter engagement programs from now until election day.
Topline discussions included how organizations are thinking about social media and ads differently, as well as volunteer upladdering, vote by mail (VBM) and how to talk to voters given high unemployment rates. The group discussed data and experiments in a wide range of historical programs and why the 2020 election has no baseline for comparison.

Two Narrative Strategies: Engaging On Race

Communication on a challenge as deeply rooted and complex as racism requires a clear understanding of communication goals and, subsequently, different approaches.
Research focused on identifying effective strategies that promote policies to advance the well-being of Black and Brown people by centering (rather than avoiding) race revealed key insights from communicators.
